What is "water balance"?

Water is "balanced" if it contains just the right amount of pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness and dissolved solids.

What happens if the chemicals are out of balance?

If chlorine levels are allowed to drop too low, algae may appear. Algae can discolor water and give off unpleasant odors. An improper alkalinity level can cause corrosion or scaling.

What is a "shock treatment"?

Particularly during times of heavy use, pollutants such as urine, saliva and suntan lotions may enter your pool causing a decrease in chlorine residual. The addition of large doses of chlorine (3 - 5 time the normal dosage) or "shock treatments" are sometimes necessary to kill bacteria and maintain proper levels of chlorine residual.
